Today I learned about first drafts. Apparently the worse they are the better it will turn out to be. It turns out great because you change it to make it that way. It gets edited and then its edited a second time and this process continues until it says what you want it to say. Also I learned what my group members are doing. What they are doing varies, there are talks about racism, gender equality in sports broadcasting, and if humans can do outstanding things why still judge people. What I have done so far is create a terrible first draft, and what I want to know is how does and EIP work. What makes a good one, where is the rubric, and why am I doing one?. It is also a great way to showcase my time management skills and how they help with doing research

I did this because I read an article called "Shitty First Drafts" by Anne Lamott. This fits in because I write bad first drafts, and the article tells you its normal because despite what teachers may say you don't always believe them so it doesn't hurt for you to see an accredited writer say this.

The Crisis facing America: Dropouts.
Throughout the nation more people are dropping out of school. They dropout at a younger age and have to struggle for the simplest jobs. They place a drain on the economy because they need governmental assistance and some don’t make enough money to pay taxes. Secondly, they send a message to other countries, that America can’t support itself educationally because its youth aren’t willing to go to school. It also sends a message to corporations that the American workforce is not at its prime anymore, the people aren’t willing to go to school let alone show up to a full time job, thus making it harder for them keep jobs in America so they go to a country with low dropout rates. Nationally speaking 20% of all highschoolers dropout before graduation. Now lets go by race 25% of all African American students dropout, 20% of all Hispanic students drop out. Lots of news and other sites will have you believe that the rate is going down more people are staying in school but that’s not necessarily true, because there are more people in schools thus making the rate appear to be decreasing, when in fact it probably isn’t.

The Dropout rate is getting some solutions from around the nation. For example, Boston Massachusetts has created a school to educate the dropouts. The school is called the Boston Public Schools Re-Engagement Center. The center allows for its students to choose when they have class, so as to better fit their schedule, and allows them to better work and spend time with their family. Secondly, Boston uses sever factors that allow them to determine if children are at risk for dropping out and offer them extra support with their academic work. They offer another program called the five year graduation plan. It allows students a fifth year to graduate and this program allows for students to take extra time for school. this program has a higher graduation rate then any other program, it also has a higher graduation rate with minorities as well. Even though the dropout rate is slowly decreasing the Boston educators feel that until it decreases to zero they haven't did a good job at what they do.
This information is very good. To me it shows that at least Boston is taking the crisis seriously, Both of there programs show promising rates that should be implemented in other places. Secondly, it shows that people's dedication to a solution will allow them to find a solution to a seemingly insolvable problem. The information provided allows for people to gather some information about the ways that they can lower their dropout rates.

In the past several days the college dropout rate in America is getting national attention. The White House has even created a plan of action to lower the national rate. The White House agrees that the national rate needs desperate attention. Part of their plan is to partner colleges with nearby high schools to show that college is an option for all students. They also intend to train counselors better and to use newer methods to promote success, while doing this they plan on focusing on having more graduates in math, science and engineering fields. They also agree that having a degree is no longer a luxury but now a necessity because it is getting harder to live off of a minimum wage. It is also intended that they will increase technology in schools to better promote the necessity of having a college education, also to better help with the math and science fields.

Hearing what the White House is attempting to do has me feeling better about the social situation. I do still have questions like does this program just target dropouts, do they have any other criteria and what schools would this program be implemented. Secondly, how would colleges partner with high schools, which would be chosen and why. However I feel as if this program would work in the lone run. This topic has been talked about now for some time and is one that better demonstrates my goals of this blog.
R/E/P
I learned a lot from the previous articles.. I learned that the government isn't just going to watch as its youth fall far behind compared to other nations and how the government is more willing to make school more appealing to its youth so to increase graduation rate. I also learned that minorities are the ones hardest hit by the lack of education because on top of the fact that they have received minimal education they have other things that make it harder for them to get a job. I decided to showcase my findings so that people will become more involved in educating the youth, and to promote this cause. Secondly, to allow my readers to become a little more educated in this issue. I believe that we do create our future and by ensuring that everyone gets an education is the way to go because you never really know who can do what until you even the playing field.

This Storify is a great way to show what happens to people what life is like for college dropouts. I also feel as if it shows how stimulating this topic is and how extensive your research has to be in order to get a solid understanding of the topic.
The following article is about the facts that dropout crisis.
In 2013 the dropout rate is 20% and currently 25% of African American students attend schools where graduating high school is not normal. This percentage is the same for most minorities and is rapidly on the increase due to lack of effort to slow the rate down. To this day 18 states still allow students to dropout before they are 18 years old. Graduation rates also change due to race and ethnicities, in minorities the dropout rate is higher than white people. IN ALL STATES THERE IS NO GRADUATION RATE FOR MINORITES that IS HIGHER THAN 89%. However, in 11 states the graduation rate is above 89% for white students. Due to these outstanding statistics there is growing concern for drop outs. http://www.americaspromise.org/dropout-crisis-facts Reflection
People are trying to change this rate, there are now groups being formed to help lower this rate. These groups show the importance of graduating and going to college, they also show that the more degrees and diplomas you have you make more money. Secondly, they stress this information to the younger children and try to help them. However I do have questions like why are some states higher than others. How I it justifiable that some ethnic groups have higher rates. I do feel as if this article stresses how important it is to graduate. |
Twitter is very controversial about college dropouts it ranges from being serious to being extremely funny.

These info graphics showcase the statistics in a way that allows it to be more visually pleasing and helps with my message and why I am writing this. Which is to allow people to gain information on this topic. I used these info graphics to better showcase my findings. I hope that they change people's mind on this social issue because education is a NECESSITY and everyone needs it just to get a minimum wage job. |
